A carotid ultrasound is a medical imaging technique that uses sound waves to create pictures of the carotid arteries, which are the two main arteries that carry blood from the heart to the brain. This non-invasive test is commonly used to:

  • Evaluate Blood Flow: It assesses the blood flow through the carotid arteries.
  • Detect Blockages: It helps detect narrowing (stenosis) or blockages in the carotid arteries caused by plaque buildup, which can increase the risk of stroke.
  • Monitor Conditions: It is used to monitor conditions like atherosclerosis or after procedures such as carotid artery surgery or stenting.
  • Diagnose Other Issues: It can identify other abnormalities in the carotid arteries.

During the procedure, a gel is applied to the neck area, and a transducer (a handheld device) is moved over the carotid arteries to capture images. The test is safe, painless, and typically takes about 30 minutes.
