Description: Holter and event monitors are types of externally fitted devices used to monitor the electrical activity of the heart. The devices used are water-proof and are designed to be low-maintenance with no interference to your daily life.

  • A Holter monitor is a small device that is externally applied to the chest for a short period of time (days to weeks) to assess symptoms or abnormal heart rhythm issues that may be occurring during this timeframe.
  • An event monitor is a similar device that has a greater capacity to monitor the heart rate and heart rhythm over a longer period of time (weeks to a month) for more infrequent symptoms and heart rhythm issues.

Purpose: These monitors are ordered for patients with a variety of symptoms, commonly palpitations, dizziness, lightheadedness, or loss of consciousness that could be due to abnormal heart rhythms. This assists in the diagnosis of abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias) through the continuous assessment of the heart rate and heart rhythm. For patients undergoing active treatment of a heart rhythm disorder, this can be used to assess the effectiveness of their treatment.

Preparation: Application of the heart monitors are done in office and instructions are provided by our team on how to wear and record symptom episodes.

Next Steps/Follow-up: Your results will be evaluated by our doctors to diagnose your condition and determine further appropriate treatment.
